Google AI Results: How to See If Your Site Shows Up

Google AI Results: How to See If Your Site Shows Up

Good news: Google will just tell you now. A free report called the AI performance report showed up in Google Search Console on August 31, and it shows how often your pages appear inside Google's AI answers (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). Here is where to find it and what to do with it.

Google Stopped Waiting for the Click

Think about the last person who Googled what you do. Until recently, they saw a short AI summary with a "Show more" button, and the normal list of links right below it. Maybe yours was one of them. Your website still had a decent shot at the visit.

That is changing. For some searches, Google now expands the AI answer to full length on its own. No tap, no "Show more". The whole answer is just there, and the regular results, the ones with your name on them, get pushed further down the page (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026).

Quick translation of two terms you will keep seeing. An AI Overview is the AI-written answer Google puts above the blue links. AI Mode is Google's chat version of search, the one that feels like texting a very confident assistant. Now that AI Overviews expand on their own, regular Google is starting to feel a lot like AI Mode (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026).

Google says this is a favor to searchers: "For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people." Its research says people "find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration" this way (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026).

There is even a polite touch: if someone already scrolled past the AI answer, Google cancels the expansion so they do not lose their place (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026).

Polite or not, this is about your phone ringing. Search Engine Land put it bluntly: if AI Overviews already cut clicks from Google Search, a fully expanded one should cut even more (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026). Google has not said how many searches this touches or how far it will spread (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026). So nobody outside Google knows how big this is yet. Including anyone trying to sell you a number.

The Report Google Just Gave Every Site Owner

Now the good news. As of August 31, the AI performance report and a new control called Search generative AI are available to every Search Console account in the world, after a few months of slow rollout (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). Google even marked the moment in its own documentation: "Note: As of August 31, 2026, we've rolled out this control to all websites worldwide" (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026).

Never used Search Console? It is a free Google tool you connect to your website to see how you show up in Google Search. No account, no report. Connecting it is the only technical setup this whole article asks of you.

The report shows how your site is doing inside AI responses, AI Mode, and AI Overviews, broken out by impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). One thing it does not show: clicks (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026).

In plain terms: the report tells you whether you are showing up in Google's AI answers and on which pages. It does not tell you how many people visited because of it. It is a visibility scoreboard, not a traffic scoreboard. Still, it is the first honest look most small businesses have ever had at this.

The Opt-Out Switch, and Why to Think Before Flipping It

The same rollout added a switch that lets you block your site from Google's AI features entirely: AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). In Google's words, "website owners can decide if they want their site to appear in and help ground responses in our generative AI Search features" (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026).

Before you touch it, know two things.

First, Google says "sites that opt out will not receive traffic or impressions from our generative AI features" (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). Opting out does not push people back to your blue link. It just erases you from the AI answer.

Second, Google says the switch is not a ranking signal outside those AI features, so flipping it should not hurt your normal search position (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026).

Site owners have been asking for this control since these AI features launched a couple of years ago, so it is a real answer to a real complaint (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). But that complaint mostly belongs to publishers who sell ads against pageviews. If you sell plumbing, dentistry, or catering, being named inside the answer is usually exactly what you want.

Google AI Results, Explained for Business Owners

Quick answers to the three questions people ask most about Google's AI results, checked against Google's own help pages on October 7, 2026.

What are Google AI results? They are the answers Google writes with AI instead of only listing links. Two kinds matter for a business: AI Overviews, the summary at the top of a normal search, and AI Mode, the chat version of search. Google calls an AI Overview an "AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper" (Google Search Help, checked October 7, 2026).

Is my business showing up in them? Search Console will tell you. Under its Performance reports, open the one Google labels Generative AI performance report (Search). It counts how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not count clicks. If your site has no report, Google says that usually means it has not had enough impressions in these AI features yet (Search Console Help, checked October 7, 2026).

Can you turn Google AI results off? It depends on which side of the search you are on. As a searcher, no. Google says AI Overviews are a core feature that cannot be turned off, but picking the Web filter after you search shows plain links without them (Google Search Help, checked October 7, 2026). As a site owner, yes. The Search generative AI setting in Search Console keeps your site out of AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the AI features in Discover, and Google says it does not affect how you rank anywhere else in Search (Search Console Help, checked October 7, 2026). The section above explains why most local businesses should stay in.

What to Actually Do This Week

Open the report. Sign in to Search Console, pick your site, and look for the AI performance report. If you looked earlier this year and it was not there, look again: it only reached every account on August 31 (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026).

Write down today's number and date it. The report has no click data, so a saved baseline is the only way to know later whether your visibility went up or down (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). Impressions by page is enough.

Check which pages show up, not just how many. The report breaks results out by page (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). If your services page is invisible and one old blog post is doing all the work, you know which page needs the writing.

Find the switch, then leave it alone. Confirm the Search generative AI control is set the way you want (Search Engine Land, August 31, 2026). For most local businesses, staying in is the whole point. Only opt out if you would truly rather be missing from AI answers than summarized in them.

Google yourself and watch the page. Type the question a customer would type. See whether the AI answer shows up fully expanded, and how far you scroll before the normal results start (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026). That scroll distance is your new competition.

Put your facts in plain text on real pages. Services, service area, hours, who you serve, what things cost. AI answers are built from pages they can read. This part costs nothing, and it is the only part you fully control.

One Thing to Skip

Skip anyone who promises to get you into AI answers, or quotes you a stat about how many searches show them now. Google has not shared that number (Search Engine Land, August 28, 2026). Nobody can guarantee placement with a number nobody has. Your own report, checked monthly, beats any pitch.
