The Compass
True north. Direction for the journey. We help a founder find their bearings and point them toward the right room.
Grow House needed an events program with real weight. We built the whole brand from nothing: the name, the mark, the voice, and the room it lives in. Built to stand on its own, and to travel.
Grow House is the coworking floor inside Trinity Place, full of people building companies. The team wanted an events program with real weight, the kind of night a founder clears their calendar for. One founder on a stage, and the right people in the room.
More of building a company has moved onto screens. That is exactly why the appetite for a real room, with real people building something, keeps growing. Grow House saw the opportunity, and the yearning to connect in person that comes with it. We built the brand to meet it.
The brief to Ninth Degree was open, and it was large. No name. No mark. No voice. Just an idea and a floor.
Build the whole thing from nothing, and build it so it could outgrow the building it started in. Grow House would be the host and the current port, credited as such, never the parent.
An events series reads like a perk. A networking night, a pitch competition, a logo with a lightbulb. Founders have seen all of it, and none of it earns their evening. This one had to feel like a society.
There was nothing to build on. No name, no symbol, no voice, no rules. Every piece of the brand had to be invented, and it had to feel earned rather than launched.
The plan was always to leave the building someday, so the brand had to belong to itself. Other floors, other buildings, other cities. The system had to pack up and move.
We defined what the brand actually is before naming it: a society for people building something, not an event calendar. Founder Series named the format and the promise in two words. Editions, not events. Members, not attendees.
We wrote the narrative on the Ninth Degree frame. The founder is the hero and the explorer. Founder Series is the guide that keeps the map and holds the door. That single decision set the voice, the metaphor, and every mark that followed.
The story gave us the symbols: a compass for direction, a key for access, a crest for membership. We built a heritage identity around them, engraved rather than illustrated, so it would feel earned instead of launched.
An old world register, plain words with gravity. A Garamond world for reading, inscriptional capitals for the ceremony, a custom wordmark for the signature. Ink on parchment, with brass for prestige and a drop of oxblood for the wax.
We shipped the brand live: a landing page in residence at Grow House, plus the collateral the format runs on. Invitation, banner, business card, wax seal, and the induction book. A system ready for Edition No. 01.
Every choice traces back to one line. If the founder is the hero, the brand cannot preen, so the voice is confident and quiet, an institution with standards rather than a startup with hype. If membership is earned, the language has to say so. Founders are admitted, not invited. Featured founders are inducted.
The compass, the key, and the crest carry that whole idea without a paragraph of explanation. Direction, access, honor. Three symbols a founder can feel before they read a word.
True north. Direction for the journey. We help a founder find their bearings and point them toward the right room.
Access. You are in. Admission unlocks the door, the network, and the next room. A founder leaves with keys they did not have walking in.
Membership and honor. The shield is a seal of admission. Being chosen means something, and the mark says so.
The hero is an engraved compass rose paired with a custom wordmark. Drawn to hold at poster size and stamp down to a wax seal. One ink per application, brass reserved for foil.
Ink on paper, the way an engraving lives. Two colors do almost all the work. Brass is the metal of the compass and the key. Oxblood is wax, seals only.
A heritage set. A custom wordmark as the signature, a Garamond world for reading, and inscriptional capitals for the ceremony.
Admission you can hold. The crest pressed into oxblood wax, the mark of an inducted founder.
The seal closes an invitation and certifies an induction. Oxblood wax, the compass rose pressed deep, something worth keeping. It is the physical proof of a place that was earned, not bought.
The system built out across the pieces the format actually uses, each carrying one line of the voice.
Founder Series walked in as an idea and a floor. It walked out as a brand that belongs to itself, docked at Grow House this season and built to sail. The coordinates on the cover are simply where it is moored for now. Other floors, other buildings, other cities. The map already accounts for them.
You bring the company. We keep the map and hold the door.
